2008 Summer Solstice Calls for Artwork

Announcing the 2008 theme for the Summer Solstice Parade as SOLAR FLAIR Executive Director Claudia Bratton also noted it’s time for the annual Poster and T-shirt art contest. Artwork can be submitted for Summer Solstice "Solar Flair" on this coming Friday, January 25th from 9:30 am - 5:00 pm at Solstice office, 924 Anacapa Street, Suite B-1F in the basement of the Anacapa Building.  Please call (805)965-3396 for more info or log onto: http://www.solsticeparade.com/

The guidelines are:

1)     All artwork must be ready to hang (wire or something to be attached to the wall).

2)     Limit of entries is three (3) per artist.

3)     Cost per entry $15.00 and $10 for children 12 and under.

4)     Size of artwork cannot exceed 30 " by 40 " and not exceed 30 lbs.   It is best if the work be close to the standard sizes of posters, 20 X 24, 24 X 30 etc. Work that is very small is difficult to reproduce well so it is suggested that it be similar to the size of our posters.

5)     It is not necessary to have the wording or date of Solstice on the artwork as our graphic designer will add.

6)      Art will be hung at the Sojourner Restaurant and must remain for the entire show from January 26 until February 16th. If the work sells during this show or as a direct result of it, the artist donates 30% to the Summer Solstice.

7)     Artwork will be picked up from the Solstice office on Monday, February 18th.

Additional: Reception for the Artists will take place on Sat., Feb. 2 from 3 – 5 p.m. at Sojourner Restaurant, 134 E. Canon Perdido St., S.B. CA 93101.  Refreshments will be provided and it’s a great time to meet & greet the Solstice staff & Board members and vote for your favorite artwork.

NOTES ABOUT THE SUMMER SOLSTICE ART CONTEST & PARADE

From the Executive Director: Everyone is encouraged to vote for their favorite artwork but the final decision if reserved for the board of directors of Summer Solstice.  Each year Solstice receives many fine pieces of artwork but the selection is difficult because the artwork needs to look good on a poster and on a T-shirt as well as being a good image on a t-shirt for men, women and children.  Solstice invests a lot of money in the winning design so the board of directors takes the decision very seriously.

Solstice product sales help to underwrite the parade and festival.  It is great way to support the event. Occasionally, two pieces of artwork are selected, one for the poster and one for the shirt.  It is important to note the theme does not have to be reflected in the artwork, but artwork needs to reflect an overall picture of the solstice celebration.  The artist or artists whose work is chosen receives a percentage from the sales of product with their design as well as the items we are selling.  It offers great exposure for the artist and some years the artwork is further translated into floats in our parade!  From an artist’s standpoint it is very interesting to see your artwork on hundreds of people of all ages, sizes and shapes.

Summer Solstice will be celebrated on the actual Solstice this year, June 21st and our event will be the 34th annual.  Posters have been an integral part of the event since its inception.  Solstice’s current Executive Director, Claudia Bratton created the first T-shirt in 1982. One of the founders of the parade, Michael Gonzales, asked her to design the first shirt.  Over the years, many local artists have been featured on our posters and t-shirts.  http://www.solsticeparade.com/postergallery/index.html;   http://www.solsticeparade.com/tshirtarchive.htm

Many of the past years posters are available for sale and please contact soladmin@solsticeparade.com for availability.  The vintage t-shirts are available in Alameda Park at the Festival on June 20 and 21st only.  Solstice usually has a few of last year’s available through the Solstice office at (805) 965-3396. Summer Solstice has given the Santa Barbara Historical Museum a framed copy of each year’s poster and in June we have an exhibit of the work at the Sojourner Restaurant.
